Do You Believe In Fairies?

I do!

And what if they lived among us!

Now in my Etsy Shop ...

A new series of fantasy paintings featuring
those adorable fairies caught in a unguarded
moment as they nap among our worldly goods.

So much fun to create! Enjoy!

"Baking Day"
"Boudoir Doze"

"Tea Time"

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all my american friends!

I hope you had as lovely a day as I did.

I spent it with my brothers and their families
and we had a blast and many good laughs!

What Kind of Handbag Would You Want?

Good morning everyone!

I have added a few new hand painted handbags to my Etsy shop. Even more to come throughout the week.

Question: If you were looking for a hand painted handbag, what design or image would you want on your bag? No idea is too crazy!

Great Films About Artists

One of my favorite movie genres is that of the lives of artists and lately I have been indulging that appetite by renting a handful of films from our local library.

I love to see the stories behind what motivated some of the greatest artists in history; what made them pick up a brush create such fabulous works of art.

Most recently I have delved into the lives of Van Gogh, Pollock, Modigliani, Dali and Vermeer:

Two hours with Colin Firth is always a joy, but pair him with a great actress
like the lovely Scarlett Johansson and you have a wonderful film about how
Johannes Vermeer was inspired to paint the divine painting below:

"Girl With A Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer
I was fascinated by the process of mixing paint by hand in
the 17th Century. God bless our modern art suppliers!

Scarlett Johansson & Colin Firth in "Girl With A Pearl Earring"
I highly recommend this beautifully cinematic film = 4 stars

Most great artists lived on the edge of society. It was
while walking over the line that they found greatness.
Salvador Dali was no exception.

He had an intimate relationship with Spanish poet
Frederico Garcia Lorca that continues to feed
rumor and innuendo to this day.

As a fan of Robert Pattinson I enjoyed his portrayal
of a college-age Surrealist painter, Salvador Dali, very much.

Robert Pattinson as Salvador Dali
I give this film 3 stars, 4 stars if you are a Pattinson fan!

Although I took art history in college to earn my BFA in Art,
I never quite "got" what made the modern artists such as
Pollock, Warhol and De Kooning great.

I was much too young and inexperienced myself as an artist
to understand the concept of taking what is in one's soul and
transferring it onto the canvas.

So many years later, I now have a desire to understand what
it is about modern art that inspires so much critical acclaim.

While re-reading many of my art books from college I came across
this film and knew it would have the answers I was looking for to
the this very question, and it did.

I now have a much clearer idea of what modern art is about and
why scribbles of paint on a canvas was considered
the pioneering of modern art.

Ed Harris and Marcia Gay Harden
BTW, Harden won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress
in her role as Pollock's wife, Lee Krasner.
Ed Harris was perfection in this role, as well, IMHO.

Another bright surprise for me was that Pollock lived
near my hometown on Long Island while creating the art
that would make him famous.

The mural Pollock painted for Peggy Guggenheim
I highly recommend this film for its education in modern art = 4 stars

Another wonderful actor to watch, Andy Garcia, as Amedeo Modigliani.
His wife was his muse, Picasso his rival, making the story of his
genius very emotional and intense in 1919 Paris.

The lovely Elsa Zylberstein as Jeanne Hebuterne, is
the very image of a living Modilgliani painitng.

Jeanne Hebuterne by Modigliani

I give this film 3 stars

Illustrator Kinuko Y. Craft

I love illustration, particularly children’s book illustration.

They appeal to me in such a basic way, the bright colors and the dream-like quality of the images.

And who can resist a fairy tale that revolves around a prince and a princess, not to mention the inevitable villain?

Many children’s book illustrators are extremely accomplished artists in their own right. With an obvious love for the subject matter, their artwork rivals that of any classic contemporary artist working today.

One of my very favorite contemporary children’s book illustrator is KY Craft. Her attention to detail and the romantic color palette is inspiring to me.

She calls herself an “Imaginary Realist” Love that!
